Choosing The Right Blinds Can Save Over £40 A Month On Heating Costs

Nov 10, 2023

Specialist online blinds retailer calculates that the right choice of blinds can lead to monthly heating bill savings of over £40 for UK residents.

Nottingham, UK - There’s an ever-increasing focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, particularly with regard to central heating. Homeowners are being encouraged to turn their heating down wherever possible in a bid to save money and reduce carbon emissions. In an intriguing turn of events, choosing the right blinds can have a significant impact on energy efficiency. Blinds2Go reveals that people can save over £40 a month (that’s nearly £500 a year) simply by switching to better and more thermally efficient blinds.

Well-Fitting Shutters Lead To A 58% Reduction In Heat Loss

Data collected by Historic England shows how different types of window coverings affect heat loss through windows. It presents some staggering findings, mainly that the average heat loss reduction for all types of blinds is 49%.

That’s a remarkable figure - and it should be noted this looks at heat loss through the whole window, not just through glazing. The findings also showed that well-fitting shutters are the most thermally efficient, delivering a 58% reduction in whole window heat loss. All window converging types and their heat loss data can be seen below:

  • Well-fitting shutters - 58%
  • Reflective roller blinds - 57%
  • Pleated blinds - 51%
  • Heavy curtains - 41%
  • Plain roller blinds - 38%

Average Yearly Savings Of £487.20 On Heating Bills

Blinds2Go took information from Ofgem to see how much money is saved when selecting specific blinds or window coverings. Based on an estimated unit price of £0.08 per KWh for October to December 2023, it’s predicted that a typical household of 2-3 people would pay around £840 per year - roughly £70 a month.

Combining these figures with the data on potential heat loss, the possible savings are hugely significant:

  • Well-fitting shutters: Monthly savings of £40.60 (£487.20 per year)
  • Reflective roller blinds - Monthly savings of £39.90 (£478.20 per year)
  • Pleated blinds - Monthly savings of £35.70 (£428.40 per year)
  • Heavy curtains - Monthly savings of £28.70 (£344.50 per year)
  • Plain roller blinds - Monthly savings of £26.60 (£319.20 per year)

Of course, the above stats assume that the homes listed by Ofgem don’t already have blinds, which is impossible to verify. Other factors should also be taken into consideration, but the headline news is that choosing different blinds could help homeowners save hundreds of pounds a year.

Even a simple upgrade from plain roller blinds to reflective roller blinds could save approximately £13.30 a month, or £159.60 per year. In today’s economic climate, that’s a substantial sum of money.
