In Toney's story, which is currently in progress, the central character spends decades developing a working formula drawn from quantum theory, particle physics and dimensional mechanics. The equation changes as the plot moves forward, and the story builds toward a test of the formula at CERN, home of the Large Hadron Collider, where scientists confirmed the Higgs boson - often called the “God particle" - in 2012.
Alongside the science theme, the novel takes up philosophical questions of identity, purpose, consciousness and the nature of truth. The characters’ fear, wonder and obsession are intended to keep the human stakes in view as the physics becomes more complex, says a representative for Toney.
The project’s companion website states that the book grew out of Toney’s broader goal of bringing different schools of thought and spiritual beliefs into closer conversation, with the aim of encouraging greater acceptance of other people’s views.
