Yahyah Launches Kickstarter Campaign for Living AI Portrait, Bringing Character-Driven AI Into the Home

Oct 27, 2026

The solid-wood interactive portrait combines multimodal sensing, persistent memory and a hand-animated character — and comes with no subscription.

-- Yahyah today launched a Kickstarter campaign for Yahyah Portrait, an interactive digital portrait that the company describes as the first of a new product category it calls the "Living AI Portrait." The campaign is live on Kickstarter, with early-bird pricing available to backers during the launch window.

Unlike a conventional digital picture frame, which cycles through photographs, Yahyah Portrait is built around a character that occupies the frame. The device recognizes faces and objects through a 5-megapixel camera, responds to voice, touch and gesture, tracks ambient light and temperature, and maintains a persistent memory of prior interactions. Successive conversations inform the character's behavior over time, so that its responses are shaped by the household it lives in rather than reset at each session.

"When people talk about AI in the home, they usually mean a speaker on a counter or an app on a phone — something you summon and then dismiss," said Zhang, founder and chief executive officer of Yahyah. "We wanted to build the opposite: an object that is already part of the room, that you look at every day, and that gradually becomes familiar with you. The portrait was the natural form, because a portrait is something people already live with."

A frame that behaves differently

Yahyah Portrait is housed in a 100% solid-wood frame measuring 32.2 by 24.1 by 3.75 centimeters, with a matte, glare-free 1920-by-1200 multi-touch display intended to preserve the appearance of artwork under varied lighting. When the character is inactive, the device functions as a display for art or photography; when a person enters its field of view or addresses it, the character becomes the primary interface.

The system runs on an eight-core processor (four Cortex-A72 and four Cortex-A53 cores, up to 2.2 GHz) with a 6 TOPS neural processing unit, 4 GB of memory and 32 GB of storage. A 5-megapixel camera sits behind a physical sliding cover, and dual microphones with noise reduction and echo cancellation support conversation at room distance. Stereo speakers, a USB-C port, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth complete the hardware, and a 2,000 mAh battery allows the frame to operate without a cable.

Rather than relying on a single input method, the device combines visual recognition, voice, capacitive touch, gesture detection and environmental sensing. In practice, that means the portrait can greet a person who walks past it, hold a conversation while someone is working nearby, or display artwork without interrupting either.

Privacy positioned as a physical feature

Placing a camera and microphone in a living space raises immediate questions, and Yahyah has chosen to answer them at the hardware level rather than in a settings menu. The camera's sliding cover is mechanical. Facial-recognition data is processed and stored locally on the device. Conversational processing is handled by a local server rather than a third-party cloud service, and data is encrypted in transit and at rest. The company states that it does not operate a subscription model and does not require an account to use the core features of the product.

"Privacy is not a policy document — it is something a customer should be able to verify by hand," said Winona, project manager at Yahyah. "You can close the shutter. You can disconnect the network. The portrait still recognizes you and still runs its character. That was a design constraint from the first prototype, not a feature we added later."

No subscription, by design

Yahyah Portrait is sold as a one-time purchase. The company states that core functions — character interaction, facial recognition, art display and ambient sensing — will not be gated behind a recurring fee. This positions the product against a generation of smart displays and AI hardware that subsidize hardware costs through monthly plans, a model that has drawn sustained criticism from consumers.

Availability

Yahyah Portrait is available now through Kickstarter. The campaign runs through December 10, 2026. Additional product information, specifications and the campaign page are available at yahyah.ai and on Kickstarter.

About Yahyah

Yahyah is an independent hardware company developing interactive AI products for the home. Its first product, Yahyah Portrait, combines character animation, multimodal sensing and on-device data processing in a form factor designed to sit within a domestic interior rather than on a desk. The company funded development independently and is using its Kickstarter campaign to move the product into volume production. Yahyah is headquartered in Delaware, US.
